Sankofa Festival: Negro Spirituals with Robert Zackary

August 2 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The Poetic Black Poet’s Story on Origins and Triumphant Path of the Negro Spirituals

This workshop led by Robert Zachary creates a platform around the profoundness of a culture born from struggle.  It works in the poetic Black Poet’s mission as bards unto the people and coincides with the same historical setting of the Negro Spirituals. It will seek to solidify the combined presentation on the origins of struggle in a foreign land under duress but illustrate the many revolutionary aspects of the struggle through resilience and revolutionary perseverance and the poetic spoken word of determination and triumph.

The workshop will defiantly place the Negro Spirituals in their rightful place as the first American musical form and their transcendent representation as true songs of liberation; solidifying them as poetic songs of resolve and restoration.

We diligently contend to authenticate the story/stories all inclusive experiences of disruption, deceit and distortion into triumphant verses of praise, dedication and progressive calls for reparations.  The workshop seeks to recognize the supreme sophisticated intellect in all three genres and their intersectional relationships.  We hope to present relative story-poems as part of the workshop and include the singing of a few spirituals to enhance the presentation.
