Evanston’s Living History Presentation

December 5, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Hosted by Craig Dudnick. Evanston’s Living History is the story of people paying a big price for rights and liberties that many of us take for granted; a community whose indomitable spirit influenced the conscience of a nation.

Starting with Anthony Crawford, born into slavery in January, 1865, in Abbeville, South Carolina; then Emancipation and the promise of Reconstruction, with the Crawford family acquiring property and developing it into 400 acres of prime cotton land.

The death knell of Reconstruction led to the emergence of the Jim Crow South.  Mr. Anthony Crawford was brutally lynched in Abbeville in 1916; the family was forced to flee to Evanston, Illinois and to the institutionalized racism of the North.

The transformation would take decades, but those who were once refugees would emerge as community leaders.

And later, Mr. Crawford’s descendants, alongside the families of Emmett Till, Michael Schwerener, James Earl Chaney, and Andrew Goodman worked to gain passage of United States Senate Resolution 39, which apologized for the failure of the Senate to enact anti-lynching legislation.
