Documentary film screening : “Beyond the Barrel: An East Orange Story”

August 11, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Come to the library for a free live screening and panel discussion of a documentary out of East Orange, New Jersey that won “Best Documentary” at the Newark International Film Festival. Light refreshments will be served.

“Beyond the Barrel: An East Orange Story” was produced with the help of award-winning broadcast journalist and filmmaker Samson Styles and made by student filmmakers who came together in the City’s SWEP program.

The film highlights students who have experienced gun violence as a friend, student, or child of a person who has been shot and focuses on personal stories spanning from a popular teacher who was a victim of domestic violence, to a student who lost their mother at a comedy club.

The panel discussion will also include other tragic events from that community that are not highlighted in the film, such as another popular East Orange teacher who was shot and killed while in the car with his son.

The film features Mayor Ted Green, his administration, and Police Chief Phyllis Bindi. Together they work to keep crime down in the City through gun buy-back initiatives and more.
