Truth and Tea: Wôpanâak Foodways and the Truth About Thanksgiving

November 14 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

We are moving towards the end of keepunumuk, a time of harvest and giving thanks for Wampanoag people. The foodways central to our culture have sustained us in our homelands, despite pressure from outside forces to abandon these foods. And now, in 2026, the Aquinnah Cultural Center continues critical work associated with Wampanoag food sovereignty, in collaboration with Island Grown Initiative and Stillpoint. In this talk, Brad Lopes, Education and Public Programs Manager for the Aquinnah Cultural Center will discuss this ongoing work and the connections to traditional Wampanoag foodways from the 17th century. He will also discuss a central narrative that oftentimes misinforms Americans about these foodways and our history: Thanksgiving. By the end, participants will feel both more informed about this event, and more than likely a little hungry!
