Sankofa Festival: Godfrey Muwulya African Dance workshop sponsored by The Yard

Born and raised in Uganda, Godfrey Muwulya started performing African dance and music at the age of five. Here he will lead a performance and workshop.

In 2005 he joined Ndere Troupe, the foremost Uganda Culture Troupe, where he became the lead instrumentalist and dancer. He left Ndere Troupe in 2008 to pursue his solo career and has since performed in countries around the world, including Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Macedonia, and the United States. In 2012 he performed with students from NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in the distinguished Faculty Concert at NYU’s SkirBall. He has performed in the Black Dance Theater’s ‘Dance Africa’ and the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s ’30 Years of Dance Africa.’ He conducts dance workshops around the United States, including at The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard, PeriDance in NYC, and schools in Boston where he resides in the summer months. He was awarded a O-1 Visa of the United States for his extraordinary work in the arts and his expertise in East African traditional dances and music. In 2013 he opened a home for talented children with poor backgrounds in Uganda where he lives part of the year.
