Old-Time Appalachian Jam at the Library
OLD-TIME APPALACHIAN JAM
Come play traditional tunes Wednesday mornings, 8 to 10 a.m. in the Oak Bluffs Public Library
community room. This first series of jams starts October 14 and runs through November 25,
2026.
Martha’s Vineyard has a generations-old heritage of fiddle jams, particularly up-Island where the
Fiddle Contest was a highlight of the Agricultural Fair for many years. Rooted in the southern
Appalachian fiddle, banjo, and guitar traditions, these tunes are still often heard at dancing and
community events — and played in informal jams like this one. We aim to keep a strong
connection to the traditional roots while welcoming modern interpretations and broader regional
styles.
Please bring your fiddle, banjo or guitar. Mandolin, bass, ukulele, accordion and more are also
warmly encouraged, and the Oak Bluffs Library has some instruments that can be borrowed. The
first hour is a slow jam, ideal for learning. The second hour is a faster jam. A basic tune list will
be provided, as well as some sheet music, although these tunes are customarily passed down by
ear and by repetition. Prepare to be challenged!
Refreshments courtesy of Tony’s Market.
