Cottage City Through the Steroscope
August 31, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Join Hal Garneau for a trip back in time as he shares more than 120 vintages photos of Oak Bluffs (Cottage City) in full 3D. After a brief history and explanation of stereo photography, Hal will take you on an illustrated history of Oak Bluffs from its Camp Meeting beginnings in 1835 through its emergence and early days as a seaside resort. Thanks to the magic of 3D, you will take part in a “virtual reality” walking tour of Oak Bluffs as it was in the 1870s.
No registration required. Email hburbidge@clamsnet.org or call 508-693-9433 for more information.
About the Speaker:
Born and raised in Oak Bluffs, Hal Garneau is passionate about the history of the town in which
he grew up, with a particular fascination for its 19th century beginnings. He is a lifelong
collector of vintage Island photographs which include over 1200 stereoscopic views of Oak
Bluffs and the Martha’s Vineyard Camp Ground. Hal has given many talks about Oak Bluffs in
the 1800s and his research as an amateur historian has brought to light many forgotten or
heretofore unknown facts about the early days of the Island’s first summer community.
