Library Friends of Oak Bluffs to host a Maker Ball to raise funds for Maker Lab Classroom at OBPL

Tuesday, June 7, 2016 – 5:00pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OAK BLUFFS, MA — The Library Friends of Oak Bluffs will host an after-hours Maker Ball fundraiser at the Oak Bluffs Public Library to raise capital to convert existing space for a dedicated Maker Lab Classroom at the library. Library staff and outside instructors will use the classroom to teach free arts and STEM educational workshops for children, teens and adults. When classes are not in session, the classroom and its equipment will be available for free public use during “open lab” hours.

STEM – which stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – has been receiving more attention due an increased interest in STEM education and a large demand for STEM job opportunities in the future. A “maker” space supports STEM education by providing a place where the community can develop skills ranging from coding and app development to soldering circuits and video editing.

The Maker Ball will take place on the evening of Friday, July 1 from 6pm to 9pm. Tickets are $55 each and are available for pre-purchase at the Oak Bluffs Public Library. The event will feature Maker demonstrations, drinks & hors d’oeuvres, a raffle, dancing, and live music provided by Eric Johnson’s jazz trio. Donations are gladly accepted and sponsorships will be seriously considered.

What is the Maker Ball?

The formal fundraiser is a way for all of us to come together to celebrate the DIY, entrepreneurial and creative culture of the Oak Bluffs community while raising funds for the island’s first free, public Maker Lab Classroom.

“Fancy” is not usually the word we use to describe anything we normally do at the Oak Bluffs Public Library, so we are excited for a chance to wear our “fancy” pants!

What is a Maker Lab Classroom?

The dedicated Maker Lab Classroom space will be a combination of both a makerspace and a beta space. A makerspace allows for building, tinkering, and making creations – free of charge. We’ll invest in a 3D printer, some laptops for coding, AV equipment / software for film editing, and even a sewing machine along with supplies. A beta space allows groups to come together to “prototype and deploy new ventures.” As our community relies on small businesses, we will help young entrepreneurs come together to use our resources and share ideas with each other.
We look forward to seeing you on the night of July 1. If you cannot make it and would still like to contribute toward the success of this educational center for our community, please consider making a donation to the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs.
Thank you!
