Flies — the insect order Diptera — may be the most maligned group of wildlife. And with some justification: some flies are pests, others are vectors transporting serious diseases. But flies are a vast and incredibly diverse group: more than 150,000 species are known worldwide, with at least that many surely remaining to be discovered. And taken as whole, flies do far more good than harm. Join Oak Bluffs naturalist Matt Pelikan for a look at the flies of Martha’s Vineyard: their diversity, their sometimes-astonishing life histories, and the indispensable roles they play in our ecology.
